Die, spammer, die!
One of the features of WordPress’s built-in spam combatting are the two levels of moderation.
You can set your version up so that it automatically requires moderation and also set words or phrases that will blacklist comments with requiring you to delete them yourself. I’ve found that these two settings can handle the vast majority of spam.
In addition to the “standard” list, I’ve added:
my forename
my surname
my employer
216.195.44.106
astromarv
allegra
effexor
email.com
online pharmacy
payday loan
poker
sex
soma
viagara
vialis
yellow monkey
While the following is what I currently have in my “blacklist” list in WordPress. While I’m adding phrases to it fairly regularly this collection does seem to be destroying most of spam comments, thanks to consistently poor English skills of the spamming lowlives. The first three are domains or hosts from which I’ve received nothing but spam, earning them a blanket ban.

Can anyone offer any extra phrases to get rid of the one or two that are still getting through to moderation? Whatever happens, of course, don’t use any of the phrases above or your suggestion will be nuked before anyone sees it!
