WordPress: Plugins I use
People stop me in the street on a surpringly regular basis asking: “Which plugins do you use on A Fresh Start, oh buddha-shaped guru?”
After slapping them, I offer the following reply (posted here as it may be of interest to others):
- Countdown by Owen Winkler
- This generates the Dates to Remember section in the sidebar. An excellent plug-in as it’s surprisingly powerful for something so simple - it can even cope with dates like “1st mon dec” or even “every 3rd week from YYYY-MM-DD until YYYY-MM-DD”
- Gravatar by Gravatar.com
- To display gravatars, strangely enough!
- Lazy Gallery by Nicholas Bruun Jespersen
- Creates the Image Gallery linked in the sidebar. I’ve played with/tweaked this plugin a lot, I must admit, but it’s a good starting point.
- Paragraph Numbering by Rowan Lewis
- Very neat, it creates an automatically incremented class for each paragraph in a post allowing me to style the introductory paragraph differently to the others.
- Google Sitemap by Arne Brachhold
- Just installed this one to have a play - it’ll be useful for other sites I’ve built that aren’t blogs but use WordPress as a CMS (and no, I’m not going to give you the URLs or it’ll give away my secret identity).
- PHP Exec by Priyadi Iman Nurcahyo
- Allows me to have PHP code within pages and posts (not that I’ve actually got around to using this, you understand!)
- WP-AddQuicktag by Roel Meurders
- I mentioned this the other day. Very easy to use, I’ve added a few buttons to my posting screen via this plugin making my life a lot easier. Well, an infinitessimal bit easier, anyway.
- Wordpress Mobile Edition by Alex King
- Formats the site for viewing on mobile devices. Very clever.
- My own WP Thumb
- I need to debug this so that it works on other sites, but it’s basically added a bunch of tags to easily display thumbnails and the like in posts. As you can tell, I use it a lot!
- WP Audioscrobbler by Marc Hodges
- Picks up the info on music I’ve been listening to from last.fm
I’ve also installed, but don’t currently have activated, Owen Winkler’s Limit Categories plugin. This allows you to restrict users to posting in certain categories based on their user levels. If I ever have guest posters here, I’ll implement this to make sure all such posts go into a “Guest Posts” category (so that visitors will be able to filter out my own dross).
[A little later] And I’m now also test-driving:
- Mini-Posts by Morgan Doocy
- Suitable for a sideblog (see “Bits on the side” in the, um, sidebar) but can also show mini-posts within the loop. Documentation is here. I just fiddled with it a wee bit to get the post title to display, otherwise it was a plug-and-play installation.

I’m trying to stop away from plugins for a wee while until I get the basics accessified (and a flexible layout that fits 800×600) but as soon as that’s done it’ll be plugins a-gogo so I’ll keep this post bookmarked, thank you!

Added on December 5th, 2005 at 11:22 amNice list, some new ones (to me at least) as well. Like Daisy I’ll be coming back to this when I’ve a little more time on my hands. Cheers for posting it (and I’ll nab the idea for a post on my site as well ta!
)

Added on December 5th, 2005 at 1:26 pmWhich of course prompted me to go look and see what I had installed. It seems I have quite a few activated but don’t implement in my posts.
And some are so old, I’m completely forgotten exactly what they’re suppose to do.
Time for a clean up I think.

Added on December 6th, 2005 at 12:42 pmOne of my favourites is “Iimage Gallery” - it adds a link to the Write Post page to take you to an “add image” page, and it’s soooo easy to use. You upload an image, then click a button to get the code to add into your post.
I also like Random Image Generator . Just a wee extra, I suppose.
Twiglight Autosave has saved my bacon a few times when I’ve accidentally closed a browser window down when I’ve been typing a post, etc.
WP Contact form is also quite handy.
CJD Notepad adds in a note facility to your admin panel. So you can keep a heap of notes in there.
I’ve got a heap more, but these are my favourites

Added on December 6th, 2005 at 12:53 pmSee the WP Mobile plugin? How on earth can I get it to not reject commenters? When you go to my site on a mobile and try and comment, it knocks you back with a rude message. (As you may remember!) Dunno how to fix it though
EM3: I’d assumed that was something you’d put in especially for me, Croila bach.

Added on February 18th, 2006 at 5:07 amHi, I’ve been looking surfing all over to find out how to include the title in the miniposts. How did you do it? I’d appreciate the help. Thanks.
Em3: I’ve uploaded my revised version of the plugin as I can’t remember exactly what I did!
